Did you know that people have been working as barbers since 5,000 BC?
If you are thinking about becoming a barber yourself then you may have some questions about how to go about it.
If so, you’re in the right place.
Read on as we present our step-by-step guide to how to become a barber.
Training
If you want to become a barber, then you need to learn the skills of the trade.
There’s a lot to learn; a good barber training course will cover a wide range of topics both theoretical and practical. You’ll need to make sure that you’ve factored in anywhere from six months to two years to learn everything you need for a career as a barber.
There’s more to learn than just hair cutting too. On the best courses, expect to learn a variety of skills, including hair coloring, beard and mustache trimming, blow-dry styling, waving and relaxing, and even manicuring and facial treatments.
Without learning your skills at a reputable barber school, you won’t be able to move on to the next step.
Earn Your License
If you want to work as a barber, you’ll need to earn your license. The licensing regulations vary from state to state, so you’ll need to do your research to learn more about the requirements for where you want to work.
In Texas, for example, you’ll first of all need to study at a state-approved barber school. You’ll then need to have completed 1,500 hours of instruction and training before you can take the state board exam for certification.
The exam itself will include both a written and a practical section. The first section will get your knowledge, and the second will test your skills. If you pass this exam, then congratulations, you are now an officially licensed barber!
Many states will require you to renew your license every year and give proof of having completed some continuing education.
Get a Job
Once you have your license, the final step to becoming a barber is to find a job.
You have a number of options at this point. You can apply to a barbershop or you might consider setting up your own business. If you want to be able to choose when and where you work, you might also consider going freelance.
Each option has its own pros and cons, so you should think carefully about which is the best fit for you.
